Hurricanes in Jamaica are much less common than most people think.
On average, direct hurricane impacts near Negril happen roughly once every 10 years and Jamaica experiences impact from a nearby tropical storm or hurricane only once every 3 to 4 years.
Even more reassuring, Jamaica has largely avoided direct landfalls of the strongest storms (Category 4–5) historically— major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) have been very rare, with only a handful reaching Jamaica in the past several decades (the last major one before Melissa in 2025 being Hurricane Gilbert in 1988). So, while mild/moderate hurricanes (Category 1–2) or storms passing nearby are more common, actual major-hurricane direct hits are quite rare.
When a storm does pass nearby, the period of bad weather typically lasts only 2 to 4 days, including both the buildup and the aftermath. The rest of the week is often warm and sunny again once the system moves away. Jamaica lies in the Atlantic hurricane season zone (June 1 – Nov 30).
The staff at our resort and local authorities are well-prepared and proactive. Guests are informed early, safety is the top priority, and disruptions are kept to a minimum. While the resort rarely shuts down entirely during weather events, in the event that severe weather significantly impacts your trip, we have found the resort to be reasonably accommodating in terms of rebooking, regardless of their normally strict cancellation policies.
We highly recommend purchasing the resort's change waiver, which will give you a credit for a year if you choose to change your booking. We also recommend third party travel insurance - just in case Mother Nature decides to add a little extra excitement to your Caribbean getaway.
